It was equal parts awkward and poignant, however, as Smith had just a few moments earlier delivered a slap to the face of presenter Chris Rock, after the comedian made a joke about his wife. Rock had quipped that he was looking forward to seeing her in G.I. Jane 2.
But it quickly became apparent that Smith’s anger was real as the broadcast cut its sound and the actor twice shouted: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth!” He then proceeded to list his collaborators on the film before seeming to come back to the earlier incident. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.” He ended his speech with: “Thank you.
