A team of experts, believed to be from Catterick Garrison in Yorkshire, was sent to identify the item

Emergency services were called to Railway Road at around 2pm this afternoon following the discovery of a potentially explosive item. It is understood that someone donated items to the heritage centre, including what appeared to be a grenade.

Police put a wide cordon in place, while customers at The Bridgewater pub are believed to have been told to remain inside, with the monthly artisan market abandoned. Crowds gathered as police and firefighters manned the cordon.A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence has now confirmed to LancsLive that the British Army's bomb disposal unit was asked to attend the scene. The explosives experts identified the item as a grenade and it has been removed from the scene.

The spokesperson said: "We have just had confirmation that the bomb disposal team was sent to assist local police. The incident has now concluded and the item, which is believed to be a grenade, has been moved off of the premises." The cordon stretched from The Old Chapel pub to The Bees Knees. The A666 was unaffected by the road closure.

Eye-witnesses gathered at the scene as the emergency services awaited the arrival of the bomb disposal unit. It is understood the grenade will be destroyed.
