Mayor, others at State of City address take time to celebrate their hometown team
Mayor Jim Ross on stage at the 2023 State of the Cityon Wednesday, pausing to take off his suit coat to reveal a Rangers jersey with “Mayor 21″ emblazoned on the back.
“How fun is this?” Ross asked, mic in hand. “State of the City when the Rangers are heading to the World Series… I made a prediction that last year I’d be talking about the Rangers being in the World Series, and I was one year off.”On Wednesday, during the mayor’s third address since he was elected to office in 2021, the anticipation and excitement for the Texas Rangers couldn’t be missed.
“I go to work at Globe Life Field every day. Driving through the streets of Arlington, I see the results of Mayor Jim Ross’s leadership,” said Morgan, who joined the Texas Rangers in 1983. “So much growth just right across the street — from beautiful Globe Life Field, the redevelopment of Choctaw Stadium, the construction of a second Loews Hotel, One Rangers Way and the National Medal of Honor Museum.
And that support extends to the Rangers, Morgan said, pointing to how Arlington fans have long supported the team, even during bleak seasons.“Because of that support, all of you Ranger fans deserve the celebration of a lifetime,” he said. “On Friday, a hot dog and peanuts for lunch sounds just about right. On Friday, you’ll stuff three pieces of bubblegum in the root side of your mouth, and you’ll look like a ballplayer.
