Apple’s decisions to remove various “clone apps” following the viral success of Wordle raises some very important questions.
Some potentially practical examples to illustrate this. What if the app name is changed but gameplay stays the same? Could an app called “Six Words” be allowed if the gameplay was identical? How about if the gameplay has one change, say updating the word on a “per hour” basis rather than “per day”? Is this still considered a clone app?
At which point in this scale is this mythical Six Words no longer a clone of Wordle but is a unique app? From another direction is Wordle far enough away from the TV show Lingo to be considered unique? Should Apple be the final arbiter defining what apps are clones, what apps are homages, and what apps are unique?
