The Austin Police Department reports their cold case unit has solved an Austin murder that dates back to May 12, 1994.
That’s when Bert Allen Mann, who was 46 at the time, was found murdered in the foyer of his home at 2510 Star Grass Circle in far south Austin. Mann apparently arrived home to find a burglar inside who stabbed him multiple times and escaped out the back door into a wooded area. Police found blood other than Mann's at the scene and used that to track down the suspect. Early efforts found the suspect’s DNA was not in the system. But by 2023, advances in technology identified a long haul trucker living near Lubbock as a possible suspect. Detectives got a search warrant to obtain DNA from the suspect.They obtained a sample from the suspect on September 8, and on September 13, the trucker’s employer asked police to check on his truck.
Austin Police identified him as Kenneth Wayne Robins, who was living in Austin at the time of the murder.They now know who killed Bert Allen Mann in 1994, but may never know why.
