State education officials essentially told The College Board that the course, an optional college-level class that would be offered to high-school students, would not be used in Florida classrooms unless changes were made due to the topics not being viewed as necessary.
The course is currently being tested at 60 schools around the U.S., and the official framework is intended to guide the expansion of the course to hundreds of additional high schools in the next academic year. The College Board, which oversees AP courses, said developers consulted with professors from more than 200 colleges, including several historically Black institutions.
A review of the updated framework, however, indicates that it does not include several topics that were called into question. DeSantis told reporters Wednesday that he had not seen the updated framework and declined to comment on changes. Authors whose works were previously planned to be included in the course, but drew objections from the state, appeared to have been removed from the updated framework.
