Some say Curren Price, facing embezzling charges, shouldn’t be suspended before found guilty. Others say just go.
Now that another elected official is facing criminal charges, Angelenos are debating how the Los Angeles City Council should move forward, including whether the official in question, Curren Price, should remain on the council, resign or be suspended and, if he resigns or is suspended, who should replace him and how.
“He’s already stepped down ,” said Johnny Andrade, president of the South Central Neighborhood Council, which is in the 9th District. “They’re asking him to leave the seat. But leave it for whom? … Leave it for folks who are really focused on slandering his name? … We need to wait until the facts and the truth are out.”
The best way forward, she said, would be to have a special election and that the city council appoint someone with voting rights in the interim — with input from the seven District 9 neighborhood councils, elected advisory bodies who represent each of L.A.’s 99 official neighborhoods.Angelina Valencia-Dumarot, spokesperson for Price, said Monday that the councilmember’s office has heard from many community members expressing support for Price.
Price. The council’s rules committee will consider the matter first, and forward any recommendation to the full council for a vote.
