He has ruled out a charging clean air zone
However, the Labour politician has ruled out introducing a charging clean air zone which was scrapped after a furious backlash in 2022. Instead, the mayor wants to introduce a ‘investment-led approach’ to bringing down air pollution in the city centre by getting more people on Bee Network buses, setting up a fund to upgrade taxis, and improving congestion in the city centre.
“If you had to push me — as we are still waiting to hear what the government has today on the investment led approach — I would meet you halfway,” he said in reply to questions on if he would reintroduce a charging clean air zone. However he added he ‘would not introduce a charging CAZ because of the impact on our poorest resident not being able to afford a newer vehicles’. He made his comments at a transport hustings also attended by Liberal Democrat candidate Coun Jake Austin and Coun Michael Welton, a Green appearing on behalf of their candidate Hannah Spencer.
“It’s about finding the right solution for Greater Manchester here and now. I am not saying no to clean air zone charging in the future where we have the infrastructure to support that but I am against pushing people for not being able to use public transport in infrastructure that does not allow them to.”
