“The Most Secret Memory of Men,” by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, won France’s top literary prize and has now been translated into English.
What’s the novel about? “This question,” the narrator complains early on, “embodies the Evil in literature.” Well, let us summon fallen djinns, then. The story is told by Diégane Latyr Faye, a Paris-based Senegalese writer whose first book seems destined to be forgotten when, four or five months after its publication, it’s reviewed in Le Monde and overnight the author becomes that hollow figure — a “francophone African writer full of promise.
Reading “The Labyrinth of Inhumanity,” Diégane becomes obsessed. The novel enriches him, shatters him, gives him a hangover. How could such a masterpiece have fallen out of print? How could a literary critic mistake the stylistic allusions and literary tributes in the text for rank plagiarism? Who was T.C.
As Diégane embarks on a quest to find out more, readers travel with him to contemporary Amsterdam, turn-of-the-century Senegal, wartime France and 1960s Argentina. At each turn, he uncovers fragments of Elimane’s story, which is rendered in a dizzying range of voices, forms and styles, including diary entries, press clippings, book reviews, interviews, letters and oral stories.
