So consider the late Queen’s two-bar electric fires, and Tupperware boxes for cereal – only an eccentric would live that way in the USA if there was money around. And yet the view from the New World doesn’t change: anomalies are glossed over, and it all merges into a blur of gowns and tiaras and gloves and, of all things, curtseying. .
Americans think the British Royal Family is something they respect but don’t understand – but in fact theyunderstand fame, being at the top of the pyramid and having a lifestyle of great interest to everyone else.
