Fort Worth-based American gave scholarships to 111 students who are the children of workers in the Dallas area.
Fort Worth-based American Airlines gave out $1.2 million overall through its Education Foundation fund, the highest total the company has given in a single year toward the scholarship program.American Airlines handed out more than a quarter of its annual employee scholarship fund to the children of workers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, giving $304,500 to 111 students.
The scholarship funds, which are granted through applications, are given to students across the country, 452 in all. But American has more than 30,000 workers in North Texas between its headquarters in Fort Worth, DFW International Airport and a handful of other offices in the region. Fort Worth’s Laura Souto has received the scholarship four years in a row to help her pay for schooling at the“It definitely helps me plan out where I can live and what books I am able to buy,” said Souto, a 22-year-old who is set to graduate next spring with a degree in public relations.And since her mother gets flight benefits for family members, Souto is able to fly home on weekends to visit family, which proved useful as her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor during her first year.
Souto also worked on campus 20 to 30 hours a week to earn money for tuition and housing, but she said every little bit counted.Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has its own scholarship program for the dependents of employees..
