I’m not saying every single builder is a sexist pig, but I’m saying it’s far too many. Too many times have I been wolf whistled from a height by a builder as if I was a lap dog, or called ‘sexy’ from the window of a moving van.I’ve had others tell me to ‘lighten up’ when I’ve called them out in public. Calling me a bitch, and telling me that it’s ‘only a joke’. Some have followed me; getting close enough for me to feel their spit landing on my skin as they shout at me.
Except, it’s not a joke – is it? I’m now terrified to walk past groups of men – builders or not. Terrified to walk alone down my own street, regardless of whether it’s day or night. To hear Amanda Holden – television personality, a businesswoman with a limitless impressionable platform of both young women and men,mother of two young girls aged 10 and 16 – welcome such harassment from men is absolutely devastating. And so utterly harmful.
Not only does this antiquated attitude set a disgusting example to young girls about their self-esteem and the behaviour they should welcome and value from men – it encourages young men to follow suit.
