American researchers have discovered a link between obesity and neurodegenerative disorders.

Obesity significantly increases the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, a new study has found.

They found that a diet that's high in sugar makes the insulin resistance in the brain higher. In turn, this impairs the clean-up of neuronal waste, therefore increasing the risk of disease. The findings, published in the journal PLOS Biology, chose to look at high sugar diets specifically as overconsumption of sugar is the leading cause of obesity and other conditions such as type 2 diabetes.Having previously shown that a high-sugar diet leads to insulin resistance in the peripheral organs of flies, the researchers turned to their brains.

"Large scale epidemiological studies have found that mid-life obesity is an independent risk factor for developing neurodegenerative disorders.

The dual role of well-known protein sheds light on Parkinson's disease mechanismsThe dual role of well-known protein sheds light on Parkinson's disease mechanismsThe protein alpha-synuclein (aSN) has long been known as a main cause in Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia, for example, when it forms lumpy protein aggregates that destroy cell function—but aSN in its natural form, without clumping, has not had a concrete, known function.
