Allister Adel spent her last day as Maricopa County attorney in the hospital.
Adel, who resigned amid questions over her sobriety and frequent absences from office, was admitted Friday to the Mayo Clinic Hospital.
They also would not discuss why they didn't make the public aware of her condition Friday, which was her last official day leading the country's third-largest prosecutorial agency. A spokesperson for the State Bar confirmed the meeting took place. Confidentiality rules prevent the Bar from disclosing details, he said.
Five of Adel's top criminal prosecutors subsequently sought investigations by the Bar and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors., saying in a Feb. 14 letter she displayed"obvious signs of impairment" while conducting county business and had been out of the office for weeks at a time since seeking treatment in late August for anxiety, alcohol abuse and an eating disorder.
Adel said she and members of her leadership team were not made aware of how the case was being handled and placed Sponsel on administrative leave. Sponsel filed her own $10 million claim against the County Attorney’s Office and the County Board of Supervisors, alleging Adel scapegoated her. Adel was facing scrutiny over more mishandled cases when she resigned effective March 25. after it forgot to file charges for more than a year.
