All Quiet on the Western Front is a brutal anti-war film that becomes a bit of a dirge Review: ⭐⭐⭐
Paul Bäumer is a teenager about to leave school and desperate to join the army. His teachers have fuelled his patriotic dreams with their rousing speeches about the “Iron Youth of Germany”. Inevitably, as soon as he and his friends arrive at the front line, they discover there is no glory at all, only violence and suffering. “It’s all like a fever – no-one wants it but suddenly it’s there,” one character observes of the way the war contaminates and spoils everything.
Berger shows how quickly the naive young Paul turns into a battle-hardened, dirt-encrusted veteran whose main ambition is simply to stay alive. As in other recent films, from Sam Mendes’, we see soldiers going “over the top” to attack the enemy position. They’re mown down by machine guns or blown up.
In the latter part of the film, they are also confronted with flame throwers and tanks. In such grim circumstances, the only relief comes through the camaraderie Paul shares with the other soldiers, in particular with Stanislaus “Kat” Katczinsky , who becomes a father figure to him. They have adventures together, stealing a goose from French farmers, and sharing conversations about their future dreams and plans.
