South Carolina star Aliyah Boston is entering the 2023 WNBA Draft, she announced on social media Saturday. Boston, a four-time All-American and back-to-back Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, is the projected No. 1 pick in the draft.
Was there any chance Boston would have stayed?
Boston said after Friday’s loss to Iowa that she still had not made a decision about whether she would turn pro. However, her coach, Dawn Staley, said that she would tell her to enter the WNBA Draft. “I’m going to tell her to go,” Staley said. “There are defenses that are played against her that won’t allow her to play her game. … So I would tell her to go. She’s great. She’s ready. She’s ready to see single coverage. She’s ready to make the next step to the league.”
Boston could, in theory, have elected to return to school for an additional year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Doing so would have likely had financial benefits. Her NIL worth appeared to be substantial, having worked with Crocs footwear, Under Armour and Bojangles, plus being part of a team-wide sponsorship with Slate Milk. But Boston will leave with opportunities to profit over her brand on the professional level and “further pursue” her dreams.
