From newbie, to representing Canada at a major international event in less than three years.
The 23-year-old farmgirl departed this week for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which run today through Aug. 8 in Birmingham, England. It’ll be her first opportunity to represent Canada at a major international competition after taking up the sport less than three years ago — just prior to the COVID pandemic.
Ashworth’s breakthrough came in February at the 2022 Canadian Invitational, a sanctioned International Weightlifting Federation event in Scarborough, Ont. Ashworth won three gold medals and broke three Saskatchewan records by posting a 98-kilogram snatch and a 122kg clean and jerk for a total weight of 220kg in the women’s 71-kilogram division. That result gave her the No. 1 ranking in Canada and a berth in the Commonwealth Games.
