According to research, low-income families have 6.9 more overweight or obese children than wealthier families

A quarter of children aged 10 and 11 in Nottinghamshire are classed as obese - but there are big differences across our area and the entire nation. The latest NHS figures show that 24.2 per cent of Year 6 pupils who had their height and weight measured this year were above healthy limits and classed as obese.

Nottingham has much higher rates than the rest of the county. Nearly a third of Year 6 children are classed as obese in the city , compared to one in five across the rest of Nottinghamshire.Obesity increases the risk of developing a range of health conditions in childhood and later life, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some cancers. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults, which may lead to significant health risks.

In Nottingham, which has high rates of obesity, one in three children live in poverty, whereas across the rest of Nottinghamshire that ranges from one in seven to one in four. The child poverty rates across the county can be seen below: After Barking and Dagenham, Knowsley in Merseyside and Sandwell in the Black Country have the highest rates of obesity. Three in 10 children live in poverty in Knowsley and two in five in Sandwell.
