The Alamo is out front in online voting in USA Today's competition for the title of America's 'best free attraction.'
On its official Facebook page, the Alamo is asking its followers to support the state-owned historic site, which is undergoing a massive public-private expansion and improvement project expected to exceed $400 million in total costs."This award recognizes outstanding attractions and businesses across the nation, providing readers with trusted recommendations for top-notch experiences," a social media post states.
For those willing to pay for an enhanced Alamo experience, the site offers guided and self-guided audio tours and special events. In March, the Alamo opened its, featuring some 500 artifacts, documents and art pieces that touch on the entire history of the site, starting with the early 1700s, before it was founded as San Antonio's first permanent Spanish-Indigenous mission community in 1724.
The mission later was converted to a Spanish military outpost and was the site of an 1836 siege and battle for Texas independence. Then it became a U.S. Army quartermaster depot and was later restored as one of the founding historic sites of Texas. But as part of the Alamo project, the site also has expanded its admission-free offerings. Visitors can register for a timed-ticket entry to the mission-era Alamo Church, which must remain free to the public under state law.
