The utilities have prearranged mutual aid agreements that provide guidance on where they will send work crews following a disaster.

“It’s a very fluid situation,” said Laura Stewart, education coordinator with the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives, which has 18 electric cooperatives, and 130 electrical crewmen, spread throughout the state and waiting on standby to determine where to go.

“A lot of it is with the relationships you form during the disasters,” Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan said. “The electric companies keep in touch with each other in the off-seasons.” Alabama Power, for instance, is sending its work crews to Savannah, Georgia. A company spokeswoman said on Wednesday that it was “too soon” to know where its teams might go or how long their team will be gone.Approximately 6,300 people were without power in Alchua County, home to Gainesville, where the Fairhope Utilities crew members were headed.. Crews from Orlando were also in Fairhope to assist the city following Hurricane Sally.
