Alabama parents and advocates fear LGBTQ kids will be outed and cut off from treatment under a possible law.

The bill would also require teachers, school nurses, counselors and administrators to report to a student’s parent or guardian any information related to a student questioning their gender identity.

While the Whites said they’ve always felt supported by teachers and administrators who have swiftly enforced rules whenever their daughter experienced bullying or harassment, school personnel statewide say the requirement to report a student questioning their gender identity could erode the trust they’ve worked hard to build.

“If passed into law, this bill would require school counselors to break confidentiality by disclosing a student’s questioning their gender identity and our ethical standards,” said Birdsong. “I am very concerned for our LGBTQ students who are already at risk and I do think this population leans on the support of school counselors, who by nature are non judgmental, who are empathetic, who are there to support them.

“That would disrupt the entire environment and safety of this young person who could potentially be kicked out of their home, could potentially be put into really harmful therapy that is not supportive of their identity, and also, unfortunately, in some situations, they could experience both mental and physical abuse,” she said.

According to GLSEN, an organization that helps to ensure LGBTQ students are able to learn and grow in schools nationwide, the vast majority of LGBTQ students in Alabama regularly heard anti-LGBTQ remarks from both classmates and staff in schools, and nearly 80% of students surveyed experienced at least one form of discrimination in school, including not being allowed to use the bathroom that aligned with their gender identity.
