Teenager Abi Coleman is making great progress in American football
An Airdrie teenager is excelling in American football, with several opportunities to advance in what is now an Olympic sport.
The St Margaret’s High pupil was in Italy earlier this year with the GB flag team at the European Championships, winning gold in GB’s first ever tournament. “The under-17s won gold at the European Championships, there were only seven of them and it’s five-a-side, so a lot of them were playing the full-time in attack and defence and never got any drives off.
“The NFL have started a Diploma in Sports Excellence , she applied for that and was accepted, which involved playing at Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium at the induction. “The focus is on women in sport, because there isn’t enough. There are plenty of young boys out there, but very few girls go into that.”
“But she would love that,and if Abi were to be offered a scholarship and it was in the right category, she would take it, 100 per cent.
