It is far easier and less costly in terms of Israeli military casualties to target Palestinian society as a whole
An Israeli army M109 155mm self-propelled howitzer is deployed at a position along the border with the Gaza Strip near Sderot in southern Israel
A house or an apartment building in Gaza might, for instance, be used as a sniper position or they might be in the path of some future Israeli ground attack, so they can be pulverised into rubble – and even then the broken masonry could be hit again to deny the enemy cover. When all such excuses and explanations have been made, Israel is directly targeting civilians which is why the casualty figures for them are so high.
Instead, a deal was done between IS and the US-led coalition along with their mostly Kurdish allies whereby the IS fighters were bussed out of the city to territory they still controlled further south while civilians were left behind in the wreckage of their city. But, if history repeats itself, the analogy for Israel is scarcely reassuring since in Lebanon the PLO was replaced by the militarily much more effective Shia paramilitary Hezbollah who fought a relentless guerrilla war against Israel which finally withdrew from Lebanon in 2000. The departure of the PLO did not weaken the Palestinian cause, as Israel had expected, since the Palestinians began the first Intifada, a non-military mass uprising, five years later in 1987.
With the number of Palestinian civilians killed in Gaza in three weeks fast catching up with the figure of Ukrainian civilians killed by Russia over the past 18 months, future Western complaints aboutto the rest of the world. Giving Netanyahu anything like a blank cheque when it comes to Israel’s actions in Gaza is already turning out to be a very expensive business.Ukrainian military members are seen during the artillery of the 56th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
in places like Syria, Yemen, Libya and, a more recent recruit, Sudan – will feed into and reinforce instability in Western and Central Europe. The Ukraine war puts a heavy political and economic pressure on these countries, most of them in the EU, through higher energy costs and other disruptions with the strain especially severe on Germany, the lynchpin of the EU.
I have been totting up the big cities, most of which I know, almost all in the wider Middle East, that have been destroyed or severely damaged by air and artillery bombardment. Perpetrators of destruction piously claim that they are taking great care to avoid civilian casualties and attack only military-related targets which is always, in my experience, a lie.
