Rick Garuckas, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Friday afternoon that the smoke should not return over the next few days, if at all, and that conditions look good for the Fourth of July.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Air quality in Northeast Ohio should continue to improve into Saturday as winds start to blow more out of the southwest, which should push Canadian wildfire smoke out of our area and more toward New England., said Friday afternoon that the smoke should not return as thick as it has been, if at all, over the next few days and that conditions look good for the Fourth of July.

Visibility in the area had largely improved to 10 miles or more by 2 p.m., Garuckas said, except along the lakeshore and near the border with Pennsylvania. The smoke in Ohio can largely be attributed to fires burning in Quebec, including one in particular east of James Bay that is roughly 2 million acres in size, said Richard Carr, a wildfire research analyst with the Canadian Forest Service, which is part of Natural Resources Canada.

Carr said the fire season in Canada has been exceptional this year, driven by dry conditions pretty much from coast to coast. While global warming has probably contributed to the conditions, so too has the switch from a La Nina to an El Nino weather system affecting the North American climate.
