The hope is that by injecting the women with a vaccine the immunologist developed over the last four decades, their bodies will generate an immune response capable of fighting off cancer cells if they spread or recur.
At Stanford University in the early 1980s, Olivera Finn had a new doctorate in immunology and advisers with expertise in cancer research. What she wanted to do was combine the two disciplines and find a way for the body’s own immune system to fight off cancer.
The hope is that by injecting the women with a vaccine she developed over the last four decades, their bodies will generate an immune response capable of fighting off cancer cells if they spread or recur. Because of the experimental nature of the vaccine, and its unproven safety record at the time, Dr.. Finn was only able to use it on patients with late-stage cancer and who had exhausted all other options. While it did provoke an immune response, the trial did not see great effectiveness in fighting off cancer because the patients’ immune systems had been suppressed by extensive cancer treatments.

Finn is a distinguished professor of immunology and surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Diego and Foldi are Pitt medical school professors and UPMC oncologists.
With an increased willingness on the part of the government to allow testing of cancer vaccines in healthier populations, and other advances in vaccine development, other cancer vaccine trials are taking off around the country. One study at the University of Pennsylvania that is testing a breast cancer vaccine in those who carry the breast cancer gene just vaccinated its first patient.
