A proposal to replace staff attorneys at the Department of Child Services with private contractors did not make the final state budget proposal.

Things aren’t going well now, let’s see what happens."Republicans behind the measure said they wanted to see if it could help the department process cases more efficiently and reduce the amount of time children spend in the system, ultimately saving costs.

Democrats on the Senate floor pointed out that this was a major policy shift that should have been debated through the months-long legislative process, rather than during budget negotiations at the tail end of the session, where there is little to no public input. That was one of the concerns that came up with leaders met with Holcomb's office, Mishler said. Another concern was the sheer amount of cases the move would impact: There were more than 3,000 cases among those counties last month.
