Haiti should be a prime tourist destination, yet it is among the world’s poorest countries and frequently experiences seismic upheavals

has reached such grave levels in recent weeks that hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, millions desperately need food, and the government has all but been replaced in an attempt to restore stability.

Haitians at a farmer’s market in the border town of Dajabon, Dominican Republic, after being temporarily allowed out for purchasing needed essentials and trade, as gang violence continues International interventions over the past 100 years have largely come from the US and United Nations. The US occupied Haiti from 1915-34, blaming political instability. In reality, that occupation was a new form of imperialism, with its forces imposing a new form of slavery in parts of the country.

Constant interference in Haiti’s affairs, poverty caused in part by its sovereign debt to France, and a weak state apparatus all contribute to the country’s instability and power vacuums today.Weak or corrupt governments, sometimes including officials who do not even live in the country, are unable to implement effective changes on the ground. The country was not allowed a military in recent years until 2017.

Gang leaders now include former police officer Jimmy “BBQ” Cherizier and Gabriel Jean-Pierre, who have seemingly laid down their rivalry to call for changes to Haiti’s governance. The gangs all have links with rich elites and government officials, but over recent months and years, seem better armed and less willing to work for or with those ruling classes.
