After battle with alcoholism, A’s player and San Jose native gets sober, realizes MLB dream

OAKLAND – Lucas Erceg wasn’t sure if this moment would ever arrive.

Using both a four-seam fastball that ran up as high as 98 mph, and attacking the strike zone with an 89-90 mph slider, Erceg picked up his first Major League win Monday in the Oakland A’s 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Taking over for Paul Blackburn in the fifth inning, Erceg collected four strikeouts over three scoreless innings to go to 1-0 as a pitcher.

Erceg, 28, had his contract purchased by the A’s from the Brewers on May 17, giving him the chance to fulfill his dream of playing in the major leagues. His MLB debut came on May 19 in Houston, and his debut in Oakland came a week later at the start of the A’s homestand. As of a few years ago, it didn’t appear that Erceg’s MLB debut would happen as a hitter. He was a second-round draft pick out of Menlo College by the Brewers in 2016, was in Triple-A for a brief time a year later, and landed in the Pacific Coast League full-time in 2019.last year that he never had a close relationship with his father and that his mother was an alcoholic, and it was his own problems with booze that got him removed from the Cal baseball team.
