Everton scouts have long known all about Adam Wharton, the Crystal Palace midfielder who starred on his England debut alongside Jarrad Branthwaite against Bosnia-Herzegovina
There was plenty of Everton pride on Monday night when England stepped up their preparations for Euro 2024 with a 3-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. But there will also have been a tinge of regret.
Blackburn knew they had a gem on their hands. And anyone who had watched his rise through Rovers’ academy and seamless transition into their first team must have seen it too. And such was the youngster’s performance in his second-half cameo against Bosnia on Monday - his pass completion was a startling 100 per cent - that there are now serious calls for him to be included in England’s final 26-man squad that heads to Germany later this month.
Now, to be fair to the Blues, given the takeover saga that continues to drag on, they were in no position to buy any player in January, let alone one that cost £18m. But it must have come as a source of huge frustration to their recruitment team - particularly the scouts that have been watching Wharton since he was a kid - that the club were not in the mix for his signature.
