GOLF | Adam Svensson's journey to a long-awaited PGA Tour victory at Sunday's RSM Classic at Sea Island has involved much more than just making up a few strokes.
Facing an early exit, Svensson floored the pedal in the second round, played his next 26 holes at 13-under and didn’t let up until he had secured his first PGA Tour title on Sunday.
Three hours after Rodgers and Martin started, Tarren, a native of England, birdied the 18th hole for a 64 to finish at 17-under and set the score to beat for the rest of the field. The putt at No. 17 nearly circled the entire hole before falling and when Harman missed from 31 feet and Theegala from 26 feet at No. 18, Svensson hit the fairway, found the putting surface for the 17th time in the round, and safely two-putted from 42 feet when a three-putt would do.
He then played the last eight holes in the second round at 5-under, highlighted by a 6-foot eagle putt at No. 15 and a 30-footer for birdie at No. 16. Svensson’s putting was the difference. He went from 33 putts and failing to get up-and-down twice in the first round to an average of 27 putts and saving par six of his last seven times missing a green. Svensson admitted in a Golf Channel post-round interview that he was thinking about quitting golf. When asked to elaborate after the round, he didn’t back away.
