The event honoring Sandler featured a number of the comedian’s friends and colleagues in attendance, including Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, David Spade, Steve Buscemi and Rob Schneider.
WASHINGTON -- Adam Sandler was named this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, March 19.
Sandler is the 24th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which was established in 1998. As a recipient of the award, Sandler will receive a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain, sculpted by Karl Gerhardt , according to“Adam Sandler has entertained audiences for over three decades with his films, music, and his tenure as a fan favorite cast member on Saturday Night Live,” Deborah F. Rutter, president of the Kennedy Center, said in a news release.
Sandler, nine-time People’s Choice Awards winner, is known for comedies such as “Big Daddy,” “The Waterboy,” “Happy Gilmore,” “Billy Madison,” “50 First Dates,” “The Longest Yard” and more films, in addition to his time as a “Saturday Night Live” cast member in the 1990s. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain Prize include Jon Stewart , Dave Chappelle , Julia-Louis Dreyfus , David Letterman and Bill Murray . Richard Pryor was the award’s inaugural recipient when he was presented the Mark Twain Prize on Oct. 20, 1998.
