“When Trayvon Martin was murdered [in 2012],” Smith said, “Equality Florida joined in putting out a statement, and we issued our Black Lives Matter policy, and there was a lot of pushback that we experienced from within the community. There wasn’t a lot of engagement by national partners.”
“People might dispute the rhetoric of what one calls it, [whether] defund [or] reimagine, but they’re supporting structural change. The public is coming to understand that small tweaks are not sufficient to fix what is rotten in the criminal justice system.” She recently facilitated two Zoom calls for anyone who considered themselves a Black LGBTQ leader, whether they were affiliated with an organization or not.
