Katy, Klein and North East ISDs on Wednesday received letters from the ACLU of Texas urging the districts to stop violating students’ First Amendment Rights by reportedly surreptitiously removing school library books or not following formal review processes.

The nonprofit sent letters to three districts Wednesday urging them to restore the books to library shelves and publicly apologize for their removal.have been under public pressure from conservative politicians, parents and community members to remove books about race and LGBTQ+ issues in recent months, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas said the three districts are of particular concern due to reported acts of self-censorship.

“What we’re seeing with the removal of books from school libraries is the targeting of Black, brown and LGBTQ+ students,” said Kate Huddleston, staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas. “Districts are removing ideas about their identities and experiences from shelves.”administrators of “disappearing” 67 books addressing topics such as race, sexuality, gender and reproductive rights from its libraries by checking them out under one employee’s library account since November.
