Ace Lancashire seaside town that's a subtle Blackpool with coastal sculptures, sweeping views and thriving high street
Standing on Cleveleys Beach, its is relatively easy to see the unmistakable silhouette of Blackpool Tower in the distance, even on a dull, rainy day. That's one of the many points of appeal for the small coastal town as it is close to the razzmatazz-y, glowing and gobby resort to bask in Blackpool's long-standing reputation as one of the country's most popular seaside destination. Yet far enough away to quietly get on with cementing its own identity just down the road.
It's also a giant public art display, with sculptures along the promenade, including the intriguing Mary's Shell on the beach, which was half-submerged in the water when we found it, but that somehow added to its shiny silver glory. The metal sculpture is the climax of the Mythic Coast art trail which aims to bring the tale of the Sea Swallow to life.
If you venture a little further down the coast, then dog-friendly Rossall Beach will be waiting for you. Although smaller and packed with singles with just a hint of sand, it is famed for being wilder and more natural than Cleveleys, offering the best chance to spot the Lake District on the horizon.
