The King George V Playing Fields in Royds Avenue had been earmarked for ownership by Accrington Stanley FC
A controversial plan to hand a Lancashire play field over to a football club for a new training ground has been dropped after drainage problems surfaced.
On Thursday night Hyndburn Council leader Cllr Miles Parkinson revealed the scheme had been abandoned and a new partnership with the amateur Accrington Football and Sports Club put forward instead. Under his proposal that club’s Livingstone Road ground could be used as coach and car park by Stanley on match days.
Spring Hill Labour councillor Kimberley Whitehead branded the U-turn ‘yet another council cock-up’. Cllr Parkinson told Hyndburn’s Full Council on Thursday night: “A priority for 2023 is to return the King George V playing fields back into use. “I am very pleased to announce the council are in discussion with Accrington Football and Sports Club about a potential new exciting partnership. Accrington Football and Sports Club are a core part of our local community. The club currently run the football facilities at Livingstone Road in Accrington.
