Accies academy coaches George Cairns and Shaun Fagan on the club's recent venture into the UEFA Youth League and continuing to produce top talent to compete with big clubs in Scotland
George Cairns and Shaun Fagan hope to keep inspiring the next generation of young talent at Hamilton Accies, despite seemingly being up against pretty big odds.
“We’re pitting our wits against Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, but we’ve won two national titles at under-18 level, and nobody can take that away from the kids. Cairns added: “It’s a success story in its own right. Our job is to develop young kids in Scotland, which I think we do really well.
“Dylan McGowan is a player who has been working with the kids for the last three or four weeks, Scott Martin is interested in doing a bit of coaching, and that can only be important.“As a group there are a lot of people who are putting a lot of time and effort into it. “I know, personally, when you’re going through at that age group there’s a lot of good players who are now sitting in pubs, because they went to their boyhood heroes and they’ve not made it there, so just gave up football.
“We’ve won two national titles in five years against your Celtics, Rangers, Aberdeens, Hearts or Hibs, who have bigger budgets than us. But a Ben Black penalty in 40 minutes and a strike from the same player gave them a 2-1 half-time lead on the night. They don’t have the budget of the likes of Celtic, Rangers, Hearts or Hibs, and lost four of the players that won the league last season, by selling Ryan One to Sheffield United, Gabriel Forsyth to Norwich City, Josh McDonald to Leeds United and Cormac Daly to Nottingham Forest.
“The winning goal, if you’re going to go out of any competition, the boy’s hit a strike from 20 or 25 yards and it’s gone right in the top bin. “We dominated the game, played really well. The first chance they had, they went up the park, it was our mistake and they scored from it, and then had limited chances after that, but we got done by an absolute worldie of a strike.”
“The task was huge, the other insight into that is that we travelled on the Monday, arrived at 5pm, trained on the pitch at 6pm and the game was at 11am the next day, because they had a Europa League game the next day.
