North Carolina passed a bill banning most abortions after 12 weeks. Gov. Cooper, a Dem., vetoed it, asking voters to pressure GOP legislators to keep the current abortion law — allowing it up to 20 weeks. North Carolina abortion fight may hinge on 1 vote:
Anti-abortion demonstrators gathered in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, May 12, 2023.
Since the Supreme Court last year overturned Roe v. Wade, states have been free to severely restrict or ban the procedure, and many across the South have done exactly that. As a result, North Carolina has become an outlet for women in the region who could not get abortions in their home states. Lauren Horsch, deputy chief of staff to Phil Berger, the Senate Republican leader, called the bill “a mainstream approach to limiting elective abortions in the second and third trimesters, supporting women and children, and ensuring that women have options available to them.” In a statement, Berger said he looked forward to “promptly overriding” the veto.
“I believe a woman should have the right to choose an abortion in the first trimester with exceptions,” Lee wrote. “The modern-day Democratic Party has become unrecognizable to me and to so many others throughout this state and this country,” she said when she announced. “They have pushed me out.” “I don’t believe in abortion, but I believe in the rights of a lady to make that choice between her and God,” Frank McCullough said. “We voted for you and here you go turning your back on us.”

Gov. Cooper needs just one Republican to help him save abortion rights in NCOne day after vetoing a 12-week abortion ban that North Carolina Republicans pushed through the legislature in less than three days, Gov. Roy Cooper speaks with Ali Velshi about the effort to save abortion rights in his state. Republicans have a supermajority in the North Carolina state legislature – but just barely. “All we need is one Republican to step up,” Gov. Cooper says, referring to the fact that he only needs one Republican member to vote against overriding his veto in order to protect North Carolinians’ reproductive rights and stop the “monstrous” abortion ban from taking effect. “Your zip code shouldn't determine your constitutional rights but that's where we are with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”

North Carolina governor vetoes abortion limits, launches override showdownIn front of an exuberant crowd, North Carolina’s Democratic governor vetoed legislation Saturday that would have banned nearly all abortions in his state after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion-rights activists and voters watched on a plaza in the capital of Raleigh as Gov. Roy Cooper affixed his veto stamp to the bill in an unconventionally public display. The veto launches a major test for leaders of the GOP-controlled General Assembly to attempt an override vote after they recently gained veto-proof majorities in both chambers. The bill was the Republican response to last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
