As abortion rights are debated in the run-up to the midterm elections, some New Jersey congressional hopefuls who want to appeal to more than the stalwarts on either side of the issue are having a hard time explaining their positions.
that ended the federal right to abortion and sent the issue to the states, a majority said Congress should pass a law guaranteeing abortion rights.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a constitutional right to abortion, “What we are watching to see is what kind of an impact the Dobbs decision has for women as voters and whether this will be an issue that energizes women and reinforces once again that elections have consequences,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
“Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, states across the country moved swiftly to ban abortion with no exceptions,” Sherrill said in a statement announcing one of the ads last month asserting DeGroot supports state abortion bans. “My opponent is fine with these laws because he thinks these decisions belong with government, not women … In Congress, I’ll continue to fight to keep politicians out of your personal health decisions and codify Roe. Paul DeGroot won’t.
In a Facebook video, DeGroot said Sherrill was “lying about my position on abortion because she wants to hide how extreme she is on this issue.” He then described his opinion as one very similar to Kean's, saying, “I support a woman’s right to choose through 20 weeks of pregnancy.”
