As the first anniversary of Marine Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui’s death approaches, his older brother took his own life, prompting a call to watch for suicide warning signs.

Kareem Nikoui was killed in Afghanistan nearly one year ago, on Aug. 26, 2021, along with 12 other U.S. service members. Chappell, in a Thursday, Aug. 18, interview at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park and Mortuary near the Riverside-Norco border, said she didn’t see the Halverson’s death coming.
Like all of her children, Halverson tended to be happy. From an early age, Chappell said, he had a genuine concern for people and wanted to help those in need. In the year since Nikoui’s death, Halverson made positive changes, Chappell said. And a few days before his own death, Halverson “stood here in front of headstone and he told Kareem, ‘I did it.’”
