He was in Germany just a few weeks ago when the borders were closed and much of Europe went on official lockdown. From there, his show in London was canceled. Forced to cut his tour short by two weeks, he flew home.
For Sumney, posting outfit selfies, whether it be showing off JNCO-evoking Tripp NYC pants or long latex gloves, isn’t really out of line with his everyday routine. “It’s typically my process when I’m at home—whenever I’m about to go on tour or to fashion week, or whenever I’m asked to film something, I always go through all my clothes and try new combinations of old and new stuff,” he says.
Sumney’s Lockdown Looks series has proven to be the ideal outlet for his style philosophy more generally, something that he’s further honed in on since moving from Los Angeles to Asheville a few years ago. “Asheville hasn’t changed the way that I dress, but it’s given me a better sense of my closet and my personal style. When I lived in L.A., I had to keep up appearances and go to events a lot.
