For the new leaders of the private club, which turns 60 this year, the challenge is to hold onto the best of the castle's throwback atmosphere while purging sexism and welcoming diverse new crowds.
Outside the front door, a greeter will make sure you have a reservation, then give you a good once-over, enforcing the club’s formal, which bans denim, sneakers, shorts, skorts, athletic wear, hoodies, bare midriffs, exposed undergarments and more.
A guest disappears behind a faux bookshelf, which opens only to a password spoken to the owl on the shelf. We came on a Monday night, prepared for business to be slow. It wasn’t. The dining room and main theater were just about full, the barkeeps busy.People order drinks at a bar inside the Magic Castle.As you explore, every other room seems to be a bar and every cocktail seems to be steeped in mystery nomenclature . You’re obliged to have dinner, which costs about $45 to $60 per main dish. The dining room is swanky and the menu leans toward steakhouse fare.
