A small, vacant lot in downtown Juneau is at the center of a dispute between the state of Alaska and the federal government. It’s the latest development in a years-long effort by Tlingit & Haida to protect traditional lands.

, including some tax credits and exemptions. It could essentially create Indian Country — a small spot where tribal law would apply, to the exclusion of many state and local laws.near the corner of Capitol Avenue and Village Street. But Peterson said it’s about more than just the land. It’s a landmark decision about tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

The Central Council has four other applications pending. If the Interior Department approves them, a total of 3.5 acres owned by the tribe would be put into trust. Now, the state of Alaska is challenging the Interior Department’s decision on the first lot, saying it “undermines key terms” of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act by creating a reservation.
