A third of Alabama’s fatal auto crashes are alcohol-related, according to a recent survey, with less than 30 percent involving legally or severely-impaired drivers.of auto crashes and DUI arrests, using statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report for 2010 through 2019.
Fatal crashes involving alcohol are most prevalent in Texas, Montana and Rhode Island, where nearly 50% of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol. Mississippi, Georgia and Utah have the lowest numbers of fatal crashes involving alcohol.At the same time, Alabama ranks third from the bottom in the number of DUI arrests.
North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming have the highest rates of DUIs, each averaging around 80 DUI tickets for every 10,000 drivers.
