The peculiarity aside of A&M playing an alleged high school squad to kick off its football history, Lamb discovered the Aggies had in fact played the University of Texas more than a month before Ball. The Longhorns prevailed 38-0 in Austin, and the Aggies opted out of playing the second half. In 1997, however, he used what was still considered newfangled technology at the time — email — to communicate his findings.
“It would be impossible for the paper to publish results before the game was played,” Lamb explained.“The game of football this evening between the university and agricultural and mechanical college elevens resulted in a victory by the former by a score of 38 to 0, the second half of the game having been called off before it was played by request of the agricultural and mechanical boys.
“You want Texas,” A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said of the Aggies and Longhorns finally playing again for the 119th occasion. “When Texas comes into the league you definitely, because of that rivalry.”
