Fool's Roll is a simple rally with a wild flourish: Teams race from Austin to Las Vegas in a vehicle costing $2,000 or less. Among this year’s group were a 40-year-old firetruck and rides inspired by Mötley Crüe and 'The Golden Girls.'
Tap storybecause it is held each year near April 1, is a simple concept with a maniacal flourish. Teams must drive the roughly 1,200 mile trek, on any route they like, in a vehicle costing $2,000 or less.
The first Fool’s Roll was held in 2010. The idea came about when Cord Shiflet, an Austin real-estate broker, suggested to a handful of friends they drive to Las Vegas in some of the worst cars they could find. Interest from others, including strangers, soon followed. Other, less practical entries included a 40-year-old firetruck, a limousine lifted on 35-inch purple rims , a 1991 blue Corvette, a Lincoln town car with a Budweiser tap next to the gas tank and a realistic re-creation of the news van from the film “Anchorman.”Tyler Dane Hansen for WSJ
Willis Skinner and his driving companion had neither eaten nor bathed nor practically spoken to another soul for 14 hours, 14 minutes and 11 seconds, since setting off at sunset from Austin in the race to Sin City.
