“These spaces shine a light and provide a reflection on a time that perhaps people don’t want to remember.”

The Ritz Motel on the city’s East Side offered refuge. Opened in 1953, it was one of the city’s first negro motels. Pinkie Smith — a prominent San Antonio businessman in the mid-1900s — owned the one-story, 24-room hotel at 2958 E. Commerce St.

“All of my students are from San Antonio, born and raised here, and have never heard this history before. It’s really important that we bring the community in, young people and long-time community members. That’s the only way that we will preserve it.” Allen was shocked the Ritz Motel no longer existed but happy that the museum and its partners offered a glimpse of a time when a travel guide helped Black travelers avoid harassment, physical harm and danger.Inside Allen’s $1.95 travel guide was another tie to that era — a folded newspaper article in pristine shape except for the yellowing of time.

The tour continued past the Zumbro Center at 621 E. Commerce. Across the street from the Sunset Station, the three-story building held a hotel, barber shop and offices.San Antonio’s African American history may be preserved in historic downtown Kress-Grant building
