“This ‘hotel’ once had a lot of fame. This was where the Archduke Philip stayed when he went from Flanders to Madrid in 1499. Jacques V King of Scotland also stayed there in 1536 when he came to Paris to marry Madelaine de France.”... [+]The property was so large, it was incorporated into other mansions built on the site, including the 17th century’s Hôtel de Savoie and Hôtel de Nemours. In 1671, Hôtel de Nemours was demolished in the area where Rue de Savoie passes through today.

“Until the Revolution, the princes of Savoy lived in this hotel, the facades of which are characterized by a design of door frames with crossettes on either side of each window on the second floor...“...[T]he building was leased in 1930 to Jean-Louis Barrault, who created his first theater company there. Then Picasso and Dora Maar settled there until 1955, and the artist set up his studio there where he painted ‘Guernica’ in 1937.”...
