A new music-focused theatrical work about the friendship between go-go great Chuck Brown and singer Eva Cassidy, will open in DC next June.

As an opera-focused nonprofit arts organization, IN Series often presents European work rather than local stories, Nelson says, but the group has been looking to produce more DC-oriented shows. When Nelson discovered Brown and Cassidy’s album, which includes music from the Great American Songbook, he looked to Hopkinson—who is also the co-founder of—as someone who could tell Brown and Cassidy’s story. “It’s a rare fusion of scholarship with music and practice,” Nelson says.
