A new study from The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) documents that visible social-communication differences for infants with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) unfold by 9 months, pointing to a critical window for targeted intervention.
University of South Carolina, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina, regarding this study, she uses the phrase"individual/child with autism" instead of identity-first language because of the age of the infants and toddlers that she works with. However, Dr. Bradshaw does use identity-first language in other contexts, especially because it is the language of choice for many autistic adults.
"For example, around 9 months, infants communicate using eye gaze and facial expression," she said."Your 9-month-old might even be using gestures, like showing and giving objects. These early milestones are the foundation for social and language development. In this study, I wanted to see if infants with autism demonstrate different patterns of social communication right when these behaviors start to emerge, between 9-12 months.
Moreover, three unique patterns of social-communication development emerged for infants with ASD. First, communicating with eye gaze, facial expression, and sounds were"consistently low" from 9-12 months. The authors acknowledge several limitations to the research. Among them is the exclusion of a non-ASD developmentally-delayed comparison group. In addition, due to sample size, clinicians administering the communication assessment were not blinded to infant familial history of ASD, socio-demographic differences between the diagnostic groups, and the diagnostic ascertainment was performed at 24 rather than 36 months when the false-negative rate is typically higher.
