South Carolina?•s Aliyah Boston cuts a piece of the net after Gamecock?•s 64-49 win over UConn in NCAA Division 1 Women?•s Basketball Championship Game at Target Center in Minneapolis, MN on Sunday, April 3, 2022.MINNEAPOLIS — When the seconds ticked off, the South Carolina players leapt into the air, as half the sold-out arena roared its approval. As the confetti rained down, Dawn Staley went over to the opposing bench to embrace the UConn players.
The game was the climax of a fascinating time in the game. Women’s basketball is growing, not only in numbers, popularity and eyeballs watching, but in leverage and importance. The key participants are flexing their power and their platforms. Staley is a great coach. She is also a role model and leader, serious about being a mentor. After her first championship, she sent a piece of the net to every Black female coach in the country, as a talisman of what is possible. She had her own piece of the 2017 net in her pocket Sunday, and, after the game, was pondering what she would do with the new one hanging around her neck.
“I see this woman every day and she’s not afraid to use her voice,” Boston said. “Coach Staley has never shied away from saying anything. Being able to speak up and use your voice, especially being a person of color … you need to have your ground.” This year, the NCAA issued more media credentials than ever before, close to 1,000. The push for equity has extended into coverage. For the last “normal” pre-pandemic Final Four — in Tampa Bay in 2019 — 716 credentials were issued.
